Annie Slade is an accomplished artist whose art practice spans the genres of landscape, still life, portraiture and figure representation. She uses both drawing and painting to express her subjects in a range of media including oil and acrylic paint, pastel, charcoal, ink, and watercolour.
Influences
I was drawn to the visual representation of the world around me from a young age. This was encouraged by my father and by teachers at school. My great grandfather had been an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales, and his daughters all drew and painted and were proficient in the field of photography. So perhaps it was ‘in my blood’ so to speak, if such a proclivity can be inherited. My mother was also encouraging, buying me monthly issues of ‘Discovering Art’ and ‘Great Masters’ magazines. Visits to the Art Gallery of New South Wales provided further inspiration. I was always impressed with drawing and developed an appreciation of skilled draughtsmanship. I took Art as a subject at Secondary School and was fortunate to be taught and encouraged by my teacher the Sydney Potter Marguerite Maloney. During my more formal art training I had many inspirational teachers.
Training
I trained at The National Art School and The Royal Art Society of New South Wales. I received a broad foundation across genres and media. My Diploma from the Royal Art Society enabled me to become an exhibiting member of this historical society. I studied at the Sydney Kindergarten Teachers’ College and taught art to children running After School Art classes and implementing progressive programmes which were experiential and encouraged creativity. This led to study and a Master of Education in Early Childhood degree by Research at Macquarie University. Continuing to draw and paint throughout working and child raising was the greatest training of all.
